The Headquarters of one of the important
divisions of South Central Railway, Vijayawada is the hub of North – South

Kanakadurga Temple
Kanaka Durga, the goddess of power,
riches and benevolence is the presiding deity of Vijayawada. The temple,
located atop the Indrakila Hill overlooking the beautiful River Krishna
is a great center for pilgrims.
Gandhi Hill
Th Gandhi Stupa, 15.8 m. high, stands
on the Gandhi Hill. The monument built in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi was
unveiled in 1968. The Gandhi Memorial Library, Sound & Light Show and
Planetarium are the added attractions of Gandhi Hill, that provides a panoramic
view of Vijayawada city.
Mogalrajapuram Caves
A site of great interest for lovers
of history. The three cave temples date back to 5th century
A.D.
Hazratbal Mosque
One of the important places of worship
for the Muslims of South India, Hazratbal Mosque is believed to house a
holy relic of Prophet Mohammed.
St. Mary’s Church
Built on a hillock in the eastern
side of the town, St. Mary’s Church attracts people from all faiths, from
all over the country.
Places around Vijayawada
Undavalli
Situated 8 km from Vijayawada, Undavalli
caves belong to 7th century A.D. A huge monolithic statue of
Lord Vishnu, in the lying down position is a magnificent sight.
Amaravathi
The ancient capital of the Satavahanas,
Amaravati is 36 kms from Guntur. Called Dhanyakataka in ancient times,
Amaravathi is the most sacred Buddhist pilgrim center in South India. The
largest Mahastupa in India, stood here over 2000 years ago. The relics
of the stupa are kept in the Archeological Survey Museum. Amaravathi is
also famous for the temple of Amaralingeswara Swamy temple on the banks
River Krishna.
Machilipatnam
56 km to the east of Vijayawada is
Machilipatnam. Once a Dutch Colony, Machilipatnam boasts of a great beach,
port and the remains of Dutch rule.
